Additional Info Syttende Mai" is Norwegian for the 17th of May. On May 17, 1814 the Norwegian Constitution was signed when Norway broke free of its 500 year long union with Denmark, finally granting Norway its independence. Stoughton celebrates Syttende Mai on the weekend nearest May 17, and has been doing so as far back as 1868, when the immigration of Scandinavians to this part of Wisconsin was reaching its peak.

Stoughton’s Syttende Mai festival celebrates our Norwegian heritage with many people wearing authentic Norse costumes (bunads), special Norwegian foods and delicacies are served, and traditional Norwegian art of Rosemaling and Hardanger are on display.

Folk dancing is a delightful part of the celebration. The renowned Stoughton Norwegian Dancers perform throughout the three-day festival.
